We remember Beatrice Wood, who signed her pithy correspondence as "Beato," for her cutting wit, outrageous stories, lustrous ceramics, and complex relationship with artist Marcel Duchamp, a leader of the Dada movement. Determined to resist the life her wealthy parents envisioned for her, Wood became a defining figure of New York City's Dada scene, embracing the art movement that reveled in absurdity, nonsense, and humor. Sincerely, Beato features self-portraits, sketches, and illustrations that Wood made primarily in the latter half of her life, after she settled in Ojai, California. They function as a pictorial diary, revealing the inner worries, emotions, and desires of the "Mama of Dada."

America 250: Rebels, Radicals, and Revolutionaries Everson Museum of Art
Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
The American story is a tangle of aspiration and contradiction, triumph and struggle, liberty and oppression. From the nation's founding, rebels, radicals, and revolutionaries have shaped the course of American history through acts of courage and innovation as well as challenges to convention and authority. This exhibition presents artists whose works reflect that journey, celebrating moments of courage and progress while also confronting inequity and inaction. Organized to commemorate America's 250th anniversary, America 250: Rebels, Radicals, and Revolutionaries invites visitors to reflect on the individuals, events, and ideas that continuously shape (and reshape) the United States. Rather than offering a single, linear narrative, the exhibition embraces the nation's messy, complex history and recognizes that the "American story" is different for every individual living within the country's borders. Some works celebrate defining moments in American history. Others turn our attention to often overlooked or deliberately omitted histories: the enduring legacies of slavery and Indigenous oppression, the struggles for civil rights, the fight for gender equality, and the ongoing pursuit of equity. Shown together, these works remind us that patriotism is strongest when we have the courage to face uncomfortable truths.

Realities Within Everson Museum of Art
Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
Realities Within presents four enduring genres of artmaking to explore how artists shape, frame, and inhabit the world. Whether a landscape, cityscape, still life, or representation of the human body, these works show how each artist's reality is impacted by their lived experience. Separated by genre and installed "salon-style" — a term inspired by the 18th and 19th century Paris Salons, where paintings were hung from floor to ceiling, covering every inch of wall space — the dense arrangement invites close looking and visual comparison, encouraging viewers to find connections across time, style, and subject matter.

New Works in Clay Everson Museum of Art
Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
The Everson has a long history of working with important contemporary artists. Over the last 58 years, the Everson has produced solo exhibitions for Yoko Ono, Morris Louis, Joan Mitchell, Bill Viola, William Wegman, Carrie Mae Weems, and a host of artists who loom large on the world stage. No exhibition in the Everson's history can compare to New Works in Clay by Contemporary Painters and Sculptors, a 1976 exhibition that involved bringing well-known painters and sculptors to Syracuse to produce a body of work in ceramics. The project was the brainchild of Margie Hughto, who served as both a professor at Syracuse University and as a curator at the Everson. For the first time in 50 years, the Everson will bring together ceramic works by the original 11 participants, as well as works by artists like Kenneth Noland and Mary Frank who participated in subsequent projects in 1978 and 1981. Five decades later, it is not unusual for clay to be a part of an artist's repertoire. New Works in Clay explores how the Everson broke down barriers between art and craft and set the stage for the current ceramic renaissance in the art world.

With their lustrous surfaces and evocative shapes, the ceramic works of Brooklyn-based artist Julia Kunin aim for maximum sensory overload. Kunin forges disparate influences like Art Deco, Surrealism, and queer abstraction into shimmering ceramic sculptures. For Kunin, discovery and free association reign supreme. Kunin's mental process echoes her physical process, ping-ponging from one concept to the next. An allusion to a surrealist artist might lead to a rabbit hole about geopolitics or queer identity. Kunin follows her trail of breadcrumbs with rigorous research—she has even learned entire languages to facilitate her work.

Julia Kunin: Electric Dream Machines Everson Museum of Art
Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse

Sincerely, Beato Everson Museum of Art
Everson Museum of Art
401 Harrison St.,
Syracuse
