John Knecht is one of the longest-practicing experimental animators in the US. His films, videos and installations have been exhibited internationally, including at MoMA, Vienna Festival, Bard College, UnionDocs, Westbeth Gallery and the Urban Video Project.

He is the Russell Colgate Distinguished Professor of Art & Art History and Film and Media Studies, Emeritus, at Colgate University, where he taught from 1981 until retirement.

Knecht's work fuses horror and humor, producing images that feel both uncanny and playful. His films and installations often draw on the apocalyptic and supernatural, resulting in vivid, hand-drawn animation and immersive video environments that explore philosophical, perceptual, and Anthropocene themes.
